Chimney liners are an important part of any chimney, and there are a few things you should know about them before having one installed. Chimney liners can run into a host of problems, but all of which can be avoided with proper installation and maintenance.
Common Chimney Liner Problems
1. Unlined Chimneys Can Cause House Fires or Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Unlined brick chimneys do not draft effectively and thus lose heat to the adjacent building materials. This earlier chimney design is often a fire danger and causes a number of other safety concerns.
Flue tiles were first used for chimney construction in the early twentieth century. However, they were not widely utilized until after World War II. These flue tiles were cutting-edge chimney designs at the time, and they were regarded as a life saver.
Flue liners ushered in the next generation of innovation. And because flue liners help “keep fire in its place,” fewer homes were destroyed by flames. Another wonderful side effect was the reduction of carbon monoxide poisoning (as a result of faulty flues allowing toxic fumes into the home.
2. Cracks and Gaps in Clay Liners Lose Effectiveness
Clay Chimney Liners found in many New Jersey homes from a bygone era, are nearing over a century old and, as a result, no longer keep people or property safe. The mortar joints and flue tiles typically fracture 15 years after construction and if the chimney wasn’t capped early on, tiny fractures occur much sooner due to rain erosion.
Stainless steel liners are more tolerant to thermal expansion, however. This protects the property from problems caused by old clay tiles. Absent a stainless steel liner, a flue fire in the fireplace chimney could damage the clay lining allowing the chimney fire to spread through the chimney wall and causing a house fire.
3. Faulty Liner Allows Fire Exhaust to Cause Damage to Mortar and Brick Work
A chimney’s liner not only protects your house, but it also protects the masonry and brick construction. Wood and gas stoves produce extremely acidic emissions which causes the lime in masonry and the clay in bricks to react with the acid which causes splitting. And because the chimney flue exhaust’s activity is so great, it can often be detected from the outside. Our experts can usually inspect gas chimney flues from the outside and identify what stage of deterioration the flue liners are experiencing by looking at visible damage.
